IPL

IPL has been around since the dawn of man. Well, more like the early 90’s. It’s a very common treatment to reduce the appearance of red undertones in your skin as well as brown spots.

It targets the lower layers of skin (dermis) without affecting the top layers of skin (epidermis). The advantage of IPL is its minimal downtime – a patient can often have the procedure done in their lunch break and return to work immediately afterwards. We recommend receiving this in a series of 3-4 treatments, spaced 1 month apart.

FAQS

HOW LONG DOES AN IPL TREATMENT TAKE?
The exact time depends on the area that is being treated. Typically it takes about an hour to an hour-and-a-half. This time frame includes 30 minutes for topical numbing to be applied prior to treatment.

DOES IT HURT?
IPL is not considered to be a painful treatment, especially because we numb you first (some med spas do not). The laser is very tolerable.

WHEN WILL I BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS?
Patients will begin to see results 7-10 days after the treatment. Full results can be seen after 2 weeks. Since the IPL also stimulates new collagen and elastin, continual results will build up to 3-6 months after the initial treatment.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?
Improvements from an IPL treatment can be seen for several years after treatment. Results can be prolonged with diligent use of SPF, ensuring that sun exposure is avoided.

WHAT AREAS CAN I TREAT WITH IPL LASER TREATMENT?

The IPL laser can essentially be used on any part of the body. The most popular areas to treat are the face, neck, decollete, arms and back of the hands.

IS THERE ANY DOWN TIME?

There is technically no social downtime. You may wear makeup immediately after the treatment and can resume normal activities. After your treatment, you may appear slightly red, similar to a sunburn. Any hyperpigmentation that you currently have will begin to darken and will eventually take on the appearance of “coffee grounds,” which will slough off as the skin heals.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OR POTENTIAL RISKS TO AN IPL TREATMENT?

Like any medical procedure, there are always risks. During your consultation, Mandy will make an assessment to ensure that you are the right candidate for an IPL laser treatment. If you experience any adverse side effects, please call the practice immediately.

WHO IS NOT A CANDIDATE FOR IPL?

An IPL treatment may not be safe for those with certain health problems, is not recommended for patients who are currently taking Accutane, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and patients with darker skin tones.
